Future… What holds for us in future cannot be pointed out definitely but we are anxious to know everything before hand. Make many attempts to analyse what is waiting for us to embrace. When happiness is predicted we let our anticipation to rise to an extent that all the small happiness around us is negated. While when an unpleasant event is predicted a fear is instilled in our mind stopping us to see and understand things more clearly. We tend to follow every possible means to stop that harm to hurt us or our beloved ones. But are these measures capable to free you from the fear your heart is gripped under. What if these fears nourish in you to compelling to take drastic steps of not living for your own self?
Are these predictions so accurate that our worry towards our future makes us forget to even live our present. Is it not that we have to carve our today to make a beautiful tomorrow. Is living 100 years with worry more pleasant than living a few years worth a fortune? If we still don’t let go this dependence then we are bound to have self bestowed curse. That will be Speculative Curse.
A young lady clad in light blue cotton Saree which was nicely pinned where as her curly hair was neatly tied in a bun not a tendril was let to peep out. Her one hand was keeping the light brown handy bag in place on her shoulder while the other clutched a file over her chest. Her forehead which was supposed to be adored by a bindi was adored by lines of worry. The dangling earrings were replaced by the Bluetooth device.
She held her head high to glance over the board of the building which said “Shekar Hospital” where she stood wishing to embark a new meaning to her life. She walked into the glass doors of the hospital looking at the people around searching the person for whom she was here. She strode in silent steps making her presence go unnoticed as her legs missed the anklets and hands felt the absence of the bangles which could always make you feel you are not alone.
She turned to move towards the reception to enquiry where a girl stood attending the people.
“Hi… I am here to meet Dr. Shekar.” The young lady enquired.
“And you are… Do you have an appointment as he wouldn’t meet anyone without it?” The receptionist replied.
“Well I am Geet… He is expecting me today.” Came her reply.
“Oh… Geet… Dr. asked me to get your joining formalities completed. He is actually attending an emergency so you will have to wait. Receptionist replied while handing over some papers to her to fill.
Geet took all the papers and started to fill them:
Name: Geet Sharma
Fathers Name: Ravindar Sharma
Mothers Name: Kerthana Sharma
She was meticulously filling all the details but what came next frenzied her hands and mind.
Martial Status: Single/Married (Strike off the irrelevant)
Both were irrelevant for her as she was no more a single nor married too. She striked both off and continued to fill the rest.
It was year back when her parents had broke the news to her that they will search for a groom for her. That was enough for her get a jittery feeling in her stomach. Dreams just made there way into her heart just like any girl would think. How will be her Prince Charming…
She was the only child of the family so she was pampered by both her parents. And knowing them she was sure they wouldn’t agree for anyone easily. All through the journey of this phase she wooed her dreams. What she would question them or how he should be or how much she could enjoy troubling each one of them. Show all the tantrums she could to her parents as she would miss them later. Even a thought of being away from them would bring tears in my eyes.
But all these things need time to happen, however fast you want to finish it. It will take its own sweet time for each event to happen. One day Geet’s Maa broke the news that everyone has to attend a puja for better future and removal of evil eyes on Geet.
She was made to dress with those new heavy embroidery choli’s along with it the jewellery. Her partition was covered with a beautiful tikka, hairs was neatly tied into plaits were concealed with the veil; the spark in her eyes was highlighted by the black eye liners. Her tendrils were constantly fighting with the dangling ear drops on who would kiss the creamy checks. While her nose ring; flare it to have been won its place without a fight. Those rosy pink lips transformed into a curve seeing her Maa applying the tikka just behind her ear.
She was made to wear the many ancestry jewels the necklace, long chains, waist band, anklets and many other. Her hands for decorated with erratic designs of mehndi while her hands were filled with different colours bangles making a humming sound everytime she moved.
Unknown to the duo was another pair of eyes who couldn’t take his eyes on his two priceless possessions. He could see the young bride married to him in Geet. She looked exact carbon copy of her mother today. His heart cried to let her go, he has taken care of her like a princess, how was he supposed to live without her, without hearing her complains. But like any other father he knew one day she will go away to her husband’s house leaving behind the parents alone but still he had time for that.
“Geet you look nothing less than a bride today.” Ravindar commented while breaking there talks.
“Yes, said it rightly.” Keerthana seconded.
“Now aren’t we getting late, both of you come down now.” Ravindar continued to move out saying so.
They reached the designated place for the puja where the priests had arranged all the things for the ritual. Keerthana guided Geet to the place where already a puja had started. Geet without any questions she followed every single step of it. Initially she did what they said but as it progressed she understood what they were doing, she was not ignorant of the procedures of a Marriage and she had attended few of her friends.
As the priests went on chanting the matnra’s she was getting scared and she did realise was dressed heavily for any normal puja. She was dressed as a bride. She glanced towards her parents they sat following each of the rituals religiously. She could have been calm thinking her parents won’t do anything that would harm her but the restlessness which she was going through was something she couldn’t control. Suddenly she was handed over some articles to complete the procedure of the marriage. Understanding her plight Keerthana whispered to Geet I will tell you everything later now follow what they are asking you to do.
Once finished with the ritual, priest started to explain the effect of Puja. “You have today married your daughter to a peepal tree, your this action has removed all the bad omen influencing her husband life because of shortcomings in your daughter’s kundali has been absorbed by her 1st husband that is this peepal tree. And this tree will be destroyed marking the end of troubles. Now you can be sure and no evil things like the death or serious illness which was lurking on her real husband has been countered. But as this is a non living thing the marriage would be termed as null and void. So now she can live a happy and prosperous life with her real husband.”
Later once everyone was back to home Geet confronted her parents to know why they did all these. For which Keerthana explained how they found out there was a fault in her kundali which could have strongly affected her life major threat was on her future husband life itself. So this puja was remedy to that default in her stars.
She need not remember also this, she will happily lead her life as normal as it was before.
Ravindar intervened “Geet we will search a Prince for you, who will take care of you like a Princess.” After listening to her parents words Geet couldn’t say a thing. Today she learnt how life could change by just few rituals.
But behind her silence was a storm which was making its way into her heart where it could reside for eternity. What Geet analysed was if the whole marriage was null and void how can her kundali’s fault be fixed with that one ritual. It would have its ever lasting effect. That meant she will be the sole reason of her husband troubled life. How can she just negate this possibility? It was not just her life which will get effected this society will even not take a second to blame her whole family. And in future if she had to end up single and alone, why to involve so many lives at stake. She could forever stay with her parents happily taking care of them.
Her decision actually reduced her burden on her heart; happiness need not require any other person. It can even be felt with small things around her. She was right like this before too just a little distraction had came in her way in achieving her goals but now it was back on track. Yes, her parents are correct; everything is clear now and back to normal. Decision was made only execution was left.
Seeing her silent Keerthana nudged Ravindar to cheer up their baby doll. “Geet, look there are few photos of the prospective grooms for you. Come we will both analyse each one of them. We wouldn’t show it to your Maa, we will prove her that it is our choice that would last.” Ravindar started to fight to cheer Geet.
“You can leave me out, Geet we both will select a good boy for you.” Keertana countered.
“You guys don’t have to fight I will not get married to anyone then I can be with you forever.” Geet replied to them.
“Geet… you shouldn’t say like that, one or the other day a girl has to leave the house of her parents to lighten the house of the other.” Keertana answered.
That itself hurt Geet, how was she supposed to enlight the house of another with a curse attached to her in turn she could be responsible for dimishing that light of there house.
“No, I won’t ever.” Geet replied before walking out of the room.
Ravindar looked worried about his daughter’s words while Keertana just took it lightly saying “She will understand in few days, every girl starts with the same notion.”
After few months
Geet was preparing papers for her presentation in the seminar organised by some docters federations when her parents came into her room to discuss with her about the boys whom they have shortlisted.
“Geet…” Ravindar called.
“Yes, Papa.” Came the immediate reply from Geet.
“Look we have reduced your work, me and your maa has come in terms and have eliminated few of them whom either one of us thought would not be fit for you. And one of them family are coming tomorrow to our house to meet you.” Ravindar put forward his wish.
“But Papa…”Before Geet could start her wish her mother intervened.
“Geet, you know the boy is a software engineer, he is well settled in life and hails from cultured & highly respected family. Has travelled around the world too but still he likes to be in India itself. Very good boy he is, you will definitely like him and you know the best part he would keep you like a princess, safe and cacooned just like us.” Keertana continued to explain the qualities of the boy and why she should accept him as life partner.
“Keertana, why don’t you take out out ancestor jewels for Geet; she looks angelic in them.” Ravindar suggested.
“No… No… That would be too loud for the first meeting. She should go for more simple & serene look. Geet wear a simple salwar with that little make up & jewels to match with it.” Keertana continued. “I have already planned what would be the menu for tomorrow.” And she went on explaining what all things have been arranged for tomorrow’s interview.
Their dreams were scaring her, they had already built a castle, a sand castle which one day a wave would wash away breaking their every desire to see Geet settled with a Prince. She couldn’t voice out her wishes to her parents seeing them weave those dream for her. The moment they mentioned about the ornaments she was drawn back to the ritual that was the last day she tried any ornaments. Her entire wardrobe was changed gradually she preferred wearing full slevees tops so that her long hands didn’t felt as empty as it were. Smaller necks to hide the bare feeling even she started to leave her hairs open covering the ears to cover the missing ear drops.
That’s when she decided not to convince her parents but just deal with the prospective families directly, there could be many reasons for not accepting one as a partner and she would make sure to find one in each of those relations. As the days would pass, it would be easy to talk them into her wishes. It isn’t there fault but would be her wish to not get married to anyone and that would be her destiny what she has decided for.
The new day began so was Geet’s plans, she was nervous but with a different thoughts as she didn’t want her parents to know about her disapproval with marriage nor she wanted the other family to find out about her acts and defame her family.
She maintained her naive look and dressed as simple as she could look. Reason behind it was if they didn’t like this simplicity they would not go ahead. First came looks then next came talks she made sure she appeared nervous, her shaking hands while handing them the coffee or shattering with words when spoken with was strictly followed only to prove her innocence. And then last strike was made when the boy and girl was left alone to talk.
And the first relevant question making Geet anxious came which was “Do you want to tell something” the boy enquired as till now she had sat silently hearing him.
Actually there is “she fumbled nervously playing with the end of her veil, would you mind if i work even after.” she questioned.
“Ofcourse, you can work” he replied confidently
“Would you have any problems with me doing night shifts?” Geet added more nervously as she wanted to reasons to break it.
He thought for a while then said “Will that be regular.”
“Quite often actually, though it depends on the circumstances and we get many emergency calls, when we will leave everything and rush to attend them.” She went on explaining how important it is for her to work, how much she wants to travel to different places where she could serve people and heal them. She went on until she could make him believe that she is not one of them whom they could keep in a cage. And that did work as he replied ” Geet… I think we should drop this here itself as I need a wife who could be with me and my family take care of them but you may not be able to do that with so much in your hand.”
She wanted to jump and dance but kept a sad look then meekly added “As you wish.” And there broke the first attempt of binding her into a new relation.
Once this was broken and the reason for it was known to her parents, they decided to look for only doctors so they will be able to stand for one another. It took more than a few days to search a suitable and dedicated doctor but they are her parents so they did find one.
Now she used to hear and gather as much as possible only for the reason that more she knew their requirement she would end up crack a plan against them.
But this time her plans were not working as her navie and simplicity was liked by them. Her fumbling shattering everything went against her. The more she failed the more determined she was to end this too. Finally came a time when she had to speak to the boy. This time her ambitions spoken directly would definitely be a problem for her as the guy also wished the same. And when he spoke it was like her dream painted infront of her eyes but then she shouldn’t have under estimate her parents either, they had always fulfilled all her wishes then what was different this time.
Her mind was now working at an alternative solution to escape from this trouble. That’s when he called “Geet Geet … What do you have to say on this Geet.”
“No… I can’t …” she replied quite shocked then looking at him she composed and stated in rather harsh tone “I mean…I can only work when I want. When I am free from my sleep only at that time I can try to work and I have so many other things of importance to finish, I cannot leave them for staying beside you every second. I can’t be a puppet of others hand.” Geet went on speaking clearing indicating her dissent in this relation. “And I am not interested in getting married to you.”
The hurt was evident in his face but being a doctor she knew the importance of each life. And she had taken the pledge to save people; cure them from every disease, take due precautionary measures to protect. And she was doing the same now too. How could she take a life of that person who is termed as equal as God?
When they came back, she was back to herself but he definitely looked heart broken. She felt bad for taking away the brightness from his face, those eyes looked lost some where but that was the only way she could help him achieve his dream.
Once the guest left her parents enquired her about the proposal. She bit her lips but then said “I don’t want to marry him.”
“But why” Keertana asked.
“Our thoughts differ they won’t match.” Geet said.
“But…” Keertana again tried to probe. But Geet was faster.
“Papa… Not him na please. He could be a guardian not a life partner. 4 years difference is too much. No Papa please.” She cutely pouted and that always worked on her parents. And there ended another proposal.
And then again after some more months Geet was struck with same round of questions but this time before calling the boy & his parents to their home, Keerthana & Ravindar decided to speak to Geet.
“Geet… look he is the guy whom we have selected this time for you.” Keertana informed Geet passing the photo to her.
“He is just 2 years elder to you, he is also a doctor and from a very good family. He is the only son that means no responsibility or obligation towards any siblings.” Ravindar went on explaining while Geet like an obedient student heard everything.
“Papa… what does he do?” Geet asked.
“He is planning to work in one of the hospital as a doctor.” Ravindar replied earnestly.
“But then what was he doing for last two years Papa.” Geet asked as he had completed his degree two years before itself
“He had started his practice but then he couldn’t manage it so now he is planning to change.” Ravindar replied.
“If he can’t decide his profession properly, how can he be reliable Papa.” That one statement from Geet was enough for her parents to stop the talks with this new relation.
Two months has passed from the day Geet had stepped into the hospital and from that, thing has turned her way as she spent most of her time here. It was in her final year when in one of the seminars her professor had introduced her too Dr. Sheaker and he had readily agreed to fill the vacancy here. So it wasn’t difficult to get a job here, he had appreciated Geet’s calibre and dreams to serve the people at that time itself.
Things in her home were easy to handle as her time was mostly taken by her patients. One day Keertana had questioned about gradual change in Geet’s attire.
“Geet, why are you not wearing any of the ornaments, it doesn’t look nice.” Keertana commented.
“Maa, I wouldn’t have removed it but see all those things are infectious to patients, we use sterilized instruments for that reason. I will have to take out all these before I attend to them and I don’t want to keep all these things in hospital, I may forget or lose them if I didn’t safeguard them so it is better I don’t wear them to hospital.” Geet sighed explaining her Maa, who looked quite satisfied.
Her heart cried to hurt her parents but that was the only way to keep them safe from worries. No one in this world is perfect, each and every fault are not identified in dear ones and when you are binding yourself to others but now when she wished the contrary. She had no other choice to hunt for excuses which would save her from seeing others in pain.
Days always flee faster than we expect, now she is rejecting giving an insight to her parents that she demanding a perfect person in her life but as the year’s rolls down people would find faults in her and her parents will stop pairing with anyone. They may feel let down but at that time it would be easy to make them understand that it was her wish to live like this.
One night duty was assigned to each of the doctors in one week and she being her helpful self used to end up taking the night duty of others thereby staying most of the time in hospital.
She was planning to take a nap when there was knock on the door and before she could answer a nurse came running in.
“Doctor, there is an emergency and there is no one to support the head doctor. Can you support him?” Nurse informed the situation to Geet.
“Give me two minutes I will be there in emergency ward.” replied Geet and rushed to attend the situation.
It was an accident case, the glass pieces had pierced the skin of the patient and the head doctor was removing the glass from his skin. Looking at the case she started to give the appropriate instruments and gave her helping hand. He even before voiced the next requirement she was ready with them. The injections were placed in hand the moment he stretched to keep the surgical instrument. The moment he cleared those pieces she was read with needles to give a stitch, clean and dress the wounds. She didn’t glance around to look who was there and who weren’t but was immersed in her job. With a junior doctor to attend even the head doctor was revealed sooner.
But looking at a Geet the head doctor enquired “who is she” to the nearby nurse as he moved away from the ward.
“Doctor, she is the new doctor from xyz department. I knew she would be there at this time so called her to assist you.” Explained the nurse.
“She was on night duty today.” Head doctor concluded.
“Actually, you will find her every other day, she very much understands others problems so many exchange their duty with her. I even heard her the other day saying, if any emergency we can call her as her home is just two lanes across the hospital.” Nurse replied and went to her lounge while he reached his cabin.
It was all to confusing for the doctor to hear an arrogant person had transformed into such a humble lady, who would help each and every person next to her. Yes, he still remembered even after what like 4 months how she rudely behaved with him. Just because he asked her to be his side while he performed his duty as a doctor. He had always thought a doctor only can fathom that kind a desire to serve but she had brutally killed that belief of his.
If he come to think of the incident just a while before was it a junior doctor helping him rather than a intern that made things easier or was it the understanding level that sub consciously which bound them.
He thought to take a cup of coffee to clear his mind and also to keep himself awake. He was a sleepy head who needed full 8 hours of sleep to wake up after every time he slept. So he always opted to not to take a nap in his night duties.
He was going to pantry when his attention was taken by a sweet angry voice and his steps freezed. It was Geet who was talking on phone. She had a book in her hand and the phone on that book.
“Papa… What is this you are awake at this time.”
“How can I sleep when my princess is staying up?” Ravindar complained.
“Papa, you are not in your teens; to stay awoke whole night. You need to sleep or else what you will do in your office meeting tomorrow. Snore in front of your clients.” Geet teased her Papa.
“Geet… You should sleep or else you will get dark circles under your eyes, then the boy who would come tomorrow will get scared” He added while Geet twisted her lips as if she interested in this boy but she had to still think on how to escape from this situation.
Then after a second her face beamed with happiness “Papa… See I am awake tonight then tomorrow I have full duty and I will get tired so let’s cancel tomorrow’s program.”
“Ok but I am calling them this weekend arrange your work accordingly.” Ravindar agreed and continued “Geet do you love someone.”
With that question asked two person held there breathe anxiously to know what she would say. The answer which came was spontaneous.
“Yes Papa.” Geet replied smiling. “I love you, I love Maa and I love my patients…. Actually I love everyone. Now that you got your answer go to sleep even I am sleepy.”
Relieved with her answer Ravindar could sleep peacefully but tears spilled from those hazel eyes. She picked her mobile where her parent’s photo was there and pleaded sorry.
“Sorry Papa…. sorry Maa… I am hurting you guys unknown to both of you. But I can’t marry anyone. I just can’t.” she cried her heart out unknown of another person who just heard everything.
It was all the more confusing; he decided it was better for him if he didn’t indulge in her matters. Then he remembered he wanted coffee, so headed towards the pantry. But again and again his mind was going back to her. Finally his curiosity won over his conscious and he wanted his answers so he took 2 cups of coffee and walked back straight into her cabin.
Geet wanted to not think about them and so was trying hard to immerse her self into the books. Her efforts were not helping her as tears were blocking her view. That’s when she heard a knock and she hurriedly composed herself. She knew it was not any nurse as they never waited for her answer but since the person didn’t barged in she stood up, went and opened the door. The sight welcomed her was a doctor whom she had behaved rudely with him 4 months back was having a cup of coffee in each of his hand. She didn’t want to recognize him but she couldn’t forget each and every detail of relations which came for her.
“Hi… Can you join for a coffee….? Actually I was feeling sleepy but didn’t want to. So can we talk for a while?” Head doctor said “It wouldn’t look nice if I ask the nurse to give me company and as you were here so thought to bother you.” He said with that cute smile that even she couldn’t have said no but did smile hearing him and that fresh brewed coffee was required to clear her mind too. She moved giving him way to come in.
Both sat down and were having their coffee but silence prevailed as none spoke a word after that. They just sat in front of eachother. He cleared his throat to gain her attention and started.
“Hi… I am Dr. Maan Singh Khurana… And you are?” that was the exact way he had started that day too.
“Hi… I am Dr. Geet Sharma…but we knew that before too.” She replied.
“Well I thought even the name could also have been changed.” he said bit sarcastically indicating her opposite words at their last meet.
“Okay, if you want to talk about that day then I think you should leave now.” Geet came to point.
“Don’t I have the right to know the real reason why you rejected me the other day?” Maan asked. “Your words had broken my belief that someone could stand beside me against all odds to fulfil my wishes.”
“Dr. It had nothing to do with you, I am just not interested in getting married you can get many girls like you wish, you can select form them. So move on.” Geet stated.
“How can I? When I see your mocking face; everytime that question is asked to any one else.” He questioned.
“It is too personal to share it with you. I guess your sleep has gone now. And I have to leave now. So if you could excuse me.” Geet replied and stood up to take her belongings to move out.
“Fine then, I will get my answers from your father. I will ask him.” Maan said getting up making his way towards the door.
“No, you are not asking anything to him.” Geet stated hurriedly as she didn’t want her parents to get any clue of her actions.
“If that gives me answers, so be it. Or else least I would show your real face to your parents that would definitely satisfy my ego.” He pressurized so that she can speak out. He did notice the sadness in those hazel eyes which said something which he was still not able to relate to.
“Okay I will tell you the truth but you shouldn’t tell anyone.” Geet put her conditions.
“You really think you can put forth any conditions” Maan said clearly indicating who has the upper hand.
“Then I am not telling you anything” Geet replied in full anger.
“Okay then bye Geet, be prepared to answer your dad’s questions then.” Maan smirked while he got up.
“Wait… I will tell you.” Geet made a pout but then started to tell him every thing from the day of her marriage till he confronted her today. “Now tell me am I wrong in thinking like this. What they did was for my happiness and now I am doing this is also for their happiness only. They will the first ones who would be sad if anything worse happen to my future husband. And people will first curse me and my own family, which I would never want in my life.”
“And who told one can be happy only if they get marry. I am happy; yes I do have regret that I am hiding things from my parents. Apart from the interviews my life is as pleasant as it was actually even better than pleasant as I can now live and fulfil all my dreams. Dream to serve, dream to make a mark in the medical field. You know now I get so much time in these night shifts that I have started my research work too” She disclosed each and everything for the first time after more than a year and that too an unknown person.
“If that was what you wanted then why don’t you speak to your parents? Why are you hiding things from them? You have to confront them on day or the other then why are you delaying?” Maan questioned.
“First, I had thought to delay it but now I want to tell them but now I am scared to confront them, what if I fail to convince them, what if they get more worried, what if they compel me to do something against my wish. There are too many ifs now hanging around me that I have started to run away from those questions.” Geet put forth her fear that she was harbouring in her heart.
“But Geet running away is not a solution; you will have to face them. The more you delay the more they would get hurt as to why you didn’t share these with them at the beginning itself.” Maan said and questioned. “You want me to speak to them?”
“No… No… I would speak to them. You don’t have to take any trouble. Thanks for hearing me out.” Geet thanked him whole heartedly as she did felt heart light after sharing it.
“No problem, you need any help you can count on me. I think I should leave now.” He got up and when he was about to open the door he continued “We could be a good companion Geet.”
“There can’t be we if I am there…” Geet killed the thought itself before he could think about them.
Just sharing her fear with a stranger gave Geet a relief as if someone took away heavy weights off her. If she could share it with a stranger then definitely she could with her parents too. Only thing that she has to worry is to convince them her point which if not today can be done tomorrow but it had to convey to them at the earliest. Finally thinking so Geet decided to open up with her parents before any other stranger puts her under any threats. Some where she did felt light and determined that’s why she was prepared to face them today. The time was right to spill the beans as she saw her papa sitting in their study with the newspaper in one hand while the other held the coffee mug in the wee hours of the day. She poppled herself next to him wishing “Good Morning Papa”
“Good Morning finished your night duty.” Ravindar enquired.
“Yes Papa, Actually I have something important to discuss. Can we talk now?” Geet asked.
“Sure Geet, from when did you have to ask us to tell anything?” Ravindar questioned.
“But this is something I haven’t told you from past more than a year” Geet added.
“Geet, what is it that you had to be so secretive about.” Ravindar asked confused.
“It all started when we went to that puja. I was too shocked with turn of events” Geet started then she went telling her point of view till date how she decided to break every alliance that came for her and as she felt things were starting to go over board as her parents didn’t stop bringing good alliance for her.
“Papa, I wanted to disclose these before too but then I couldn’t gather enough courage till today.” Geet added that meekly.
“What special did happen today that you got this courage.” Keertana asked Geet who had heard there conversation.
“Last night I met Dr. Maan in hospital, he confronted me to know why I portrayed the contrary to what I am. I wouldn’t have told him anything but then he threatened me that he would question directly to you guys. And I didn’t want anyone else coming in between us. I didn’t want to hurt you more than what I had already done.” Geet stated.
“Where did you meet him, did he come all the way to question you?” Ravindar questioned.
“Head doctor of that department had quit last week. May be he was recruited for his place.” Geet replied while joining the dots of his presence all of a sudden. “Papa Maa…. I am really very sorry but I don’t want to marry anyone.”
“Geet, that was only for your well being. Don’t you want your parents to witness their daughter settled with family.” Keertana asked.
“Maa … How can you say I am not happy or will not be happy if I won’t get married. I will be more than happy living with my parents. And you guys are and will be my one and only family.” Geet said
Ravindar & Keertana both were sad looking at their child who had hid so much for such a long time. They both knew forcing their decision on Geet could be disastrous as she was more adamant girl. She rarely makes any decision but once she has determined to something then she would never let go of that either.
“Geet we can think about an alternative.” Ravindar started only to be interrupted by Geet.
“But Papa…” Geet interrupted while Ravindar showed his hands to let him complete.
“However for now we will go with your decision.” Ravindar concluded.
“Thank you Papa…” Geet hugged him feeling overwhelmed of the fact that from now she has nothing to hide or feel guilty about. Just then the clock struck at 8:00 making its humming sound. “It is already 8; I have to rush to hospital soon. Maa… Papa… Thank you once again.” Geet saying so sprinted out leaving behind her parents to think of a solution.
Anyone who looked at her would guess it that she was the happiest person. There wasn’t any difference in her dressing or even in her mannerism; then why did she look different. It was the smile that adored her face; it added the extra charisma to her personality. Her eyes held a new flicker in it. The tension lines on her forehead were long gone. She looked cute with that dimple which had formed on cheeks due to that big smile.
Time was running really fast but that didn’t matter as she was attending to the each and everyone in her way taking her sweet time speaking to them. She had just finished one of the patients dressing and summoned the next patient, while she went in to sterilize her hands to check the new patient. She heard someone coming in so she said “Please sit down I will come, by the way what has happened to you.” But there was no reply from the other end. She thought may be the person has not heard her.
She came out wiping her hands and was shocked to see Dr. Maan Singh Khurana spreading his lunch box out on her side table and giving her that cute smile of his but she did plaster a formal smile on and greeted him.
“Doctor, you here at this time. I don’t have anything else to spill. And actually I have patients to attend today. So could you please give us some privacy?” Geet explained calmly.
“Oh Geet, you don’t have to worry. Everyone in our department has gone out for lunch but as I had got the lunch box; I thought not to go with them. And when I checked you had finished your morning appointments so thought to have lunch with you. As I had seen you get lunch from the home yesterday. Don’t hesitate come join in. I am damn hungry” Maan said so and started to have his lunch not even waiting for Geet.
Sighing Geet got her box and joined him but not before confirming that the previous patient was indeed her last patient for the morning session. Well who knew this lunch could give way to more meeting between them as days rolled down morning coffee, afternoon lunch, evening coffee, night dinner when they had night duties and midnight coffee was the things which made them both to spend time with each other and know about the other. But always it had to be Maan who had to take initiative not that she didn’t wait for him but never did she want to give him any hopes. Nevertheless things can’t stay same for a long time as these meetings were getting noticed by many and few who could change the course of these two people too.
“There can’t be we if I am there…” was ringing in his mind as he walked out of her cabin. It had been only a week he had joined Shekar’s Hospital and was very happy to get into this institution but just one night duty all his happiness and contentment everything as gone out of him. Today he proved himself right on choosing a right life partner but still he couldn’t stop himself cursing his luck too; for making her stubborn for doing this to him.
But before taking any step further towards her Maan had to speak to his parents, not that they were against his choice. Actually they would be very happy with his choice but then it was a relation which even they had wanted to get fixed and that rejection did sadden them. Any parents would get disappointed with pointless refusal.
And once Maan had informed to his parents about the real reason for that refusal they were very happy to agree with the proposal. Furthermore about the curse attached to her was something which they didn’t bother about as life is happiest with its mysterious string bound to it.
That was all he needed to fuel his heart to gear his mission bewitch Geet in his terms. To set this mission on rolls he needs to first befriend with her and need to enchant her in to his charms. How long could she resist Maan’s charismatic personality? It was not hard for him to get the schedule of Dr. Geet’s appointment. All thanks to centralised online system of appointment opened for the patients to obtain the appointment for there doctors offcourse there would be some walk-in’s but that was rarely entertained by the hospital authorities.
Now that he had known her schedules before hand, he could always plan his schedules accordingly. Night duties was synced as much as possible well that was not a big problem as he was heading his department and he could change it according to his wishes. It requires time to mend her but then he was ready to give all the time she needed too. In the midst of his patients to find time was difficult but when he was had to bewitch her he had to make way for it too.
Like wise Maan made sure all his free time was spent with her initially Geet was pretending as formal as she could portray but then she was back to her normal talkative and bubbly nature of hers as the days passed by. They did nothing but talk to each other and the topic varied from the hospital to Maan helping Geet in her research to the recipes they could cook to their favourites to pranks they had played on others. All in all they were both in a phase where they could easily share secrets with each other but then exceptions to that were feeling what they had harboured for each other.
Yes, Geet after a certain time started to enjoy his company and even understood how well they could gel together but the more she fell for him the more she felt to be away from him and hide those thoughts. Geet believed those thoughts were only dreams which she could cherish for the life time and wouldn’t last long. Every time Maan was late to visit her, she used to sense a tug in her heart may be today is the last time he would come. May be he moved on with someone else to spend time with but then her mind was fast enough to console her that one day that had to happen. Not bind him with herself; somewhere with someone else he would be living happily was the only thing which would make her normal & her happy self would be back in form.
Everything was going on fine until the New Year started and a new junior doctor was appointed that too in Geet’s department as her assistant. She was Dr. Anu who had recently finished her degree and had joined Shekar hospital. Everytime Dr. Maan came to visit Dr. Geet; they were joined by Dr. Anu too. Geet could see how well these two got along so soon as if they knew from a very long time. Sometimes it’s so happens that they both would talk and Geet becomes that mute spectator.
Maan did notice Geet being silent sometimes like observing him & Anu while they chatted. He sometime did observed some gloominess in her eyes but that lasted only for seconds making him wonder did he really saw something or not. He was lost in his thoughts as he was moving to his cabin when he heard a little cry and he knew who that was. He rolled his eyes as he witnessed Dr. Anu had fallen on the ground with her twisted ankle and was trying to walk holding on to the walls. Without any second thought Maan stood before her asking what is she doing & how this all happened. For which Dr. Anu pouted slightly and said “I was walking on the heels which resulted in twisted ankle and it is paining a lot.”
“If you don’t know how to walk in the heels why do you buy them?” Maan questioned.
“Here I am in trouble and you are taunting me only.” Anu cribbed.
“Okay, let me get you a wheel chair then.” Maan suggested.
“I am not sitting in them; yuck that is so not me.” Anu cried.
“Then what else would this princess wish for.” Maan taunted again.
“Maan, if you can’t help me then leave now. I will manage” Anu said disappointed and crying in pain.
And next moment Maan lifted her in his arms and took her to Geet’s cabin to get the medication for Anu. Geet was shocked to see them like that she stood numb at the level of comfort they both were sharing.
“Geet just check Anu once, she has twisted her ankle.” Maan said without looking at her.
Geet silently followed to treat her, she could see the care and concern for Anu. “Could she be the one for Maan.” Was all she could think of?
Maan was leaving when Anu held his wrist to stop him & placed a kiss on his cheek and wished “Thank you.” for which Maan just smiled at her and brushed his hands over Anu’s head and left.
That was enough to nail the coffin, Geet was sure Maan would move on with Anu. She was what he had always wished for. A part of her rejoiced that her love would be happy but a larger part of her heart screamed to have lost him.
Maan just walked out of Geet’s cabin shaking his head wondering how Anu can be such a kid even now. Just few steps he was away from his cabin when he saw one familiar face who was waiting for him. Maan knew who that was the next instant he asked him to join in his cabin. Things were not moving in right pace and seeing him Maan didn’t know what to do.
Geet settled for breakfast wishing her parents “Good morning Papa”, “Good morning Maa”. Nowadays everything was good for Geet, no tension about anything. Only happiness Parents were happy with her decision and in relation to Maan that was never a thing to worry about why to worry about something which is never hers. She was all smiling and getting her break fast when her father interrupted “Geet, are you going to think about your marriage decision again.”
Geet hands stopped in mid while she replied “Papa, I thought we have talked about that already.”
“I know Geet, we have but still I wanted to ask you one last time.” Ravindar said “As someone came asking for your hand so before I replied them anything wanted to know your opinion.”
“Papa, I am and will always stick to the decision of not marrying anyone.” Geet replied confidently.
“Okay, as you wish from now on I will never ask this question.” Ravindar concluded that topic there.
“Thank you again Papa. You are the best.” Geet answered back feeling happy.
Geet was all set to leave when Ravindar again interrupted “Geet, I almost forgot today too. I need you at the registrar office day after tomorrow.”
“But Papa, you always brought things in Maa’s name, why do you need me?” Geet questioned.
“Yes, but since you decided not to marry I will have to get things in your name too. To make sure your future is also secure.” Ravindar stated.
“Papa, I will buy them in future when I have enough savings with me.” Geet cribbed cutely to make her Papa agree to her wishes.
“Geet, Let me complete some wishes atleast, you can take your time and explore in detail” Ravindar managed to say putting as stern face as possible so that she would oblige.
“Okay I agree this time only.” Geet said while taking her hand bag.
“Don’t worry Geet, this one is the best. You will cherish till the end.” Ravindar stated proudly at his choice.
“But I can’t take whole day off I have many appointments with patients.” Geet told confused and worried too.
“You take off for an hour and you can leave the moment it is done. Anyways there will not be too much of formalities. I would talk to the officials there and will get the things moving faster.” Ravindar assured Geet.
“That’s great Papa, I will some how make that hour free. Now, I am getting late bye see you soon.” Geet rushed out saying so, while Ravindar & Keertana who was the spectator till now left a sigh seeing her.
As soon as Geet left Ravindar started “Keertana, you be ready day after tomorrow and make sure everything runs smoothly.”
“Yes, I will keep all the papers ready.” Keertana replied.
An hour of leave means Geet had to make changes in her schedule and also thought to take help of Dr. Anu. “Anu, are you free I need a favour.” Geet said as soon as she saw her coming to Geet’s cabin.
“Yes, Dr. Geet tell me. How can I help you?” Anu asked.
“Well I need some time to go out day after tomorrow. Could you cover it up for me during that time?” Geet asked Anu.
“Doctor, don’t mind but can I ask you to meet whom you want to take off.” Anu tried to tease as she had noticed Geet being single and still not ready to mingle.
“Anu, you can help or not tell me other than that; it is none of your business.” Geet said in anger.
“Geet, why are you scaring the poor soul?” Maan replied as he came in along with 3 cups of coffee came behind him.
“Maan, now don’t support her. She needs to know her limits.” Geet warned them both.
“Why Geet what did she ask that you are getting angry. Have this cup of coffee it will reduce your anger.” Maan said with it automatically a smile formed on Geet’s face.
“Wow… Dr. Maan you vanished Dr. Geet’s anger in a second.” Anu said giving a look towards the duo.
“Okay, now tell me what is the problem?” Maan asked.
“Nothing much I was asking if Anu could handle the patients for an hour and half. Papa needs me at that time. Anyways I have moved all the appointments just any walk-in she has to handle.” Geet said her problem to Maan.
Maan gave a shocked look at Geet then at Anu and replied “Geet are you sure, I don’t think we should leave patients in the hands of Anu. Poor patients would suffer from her hands.”
Anu made an O and started searching something in to hit Dr. Maan for making such a comment on her. But then stopped hearing to the musical sound of Geet as she couldn’t control her laugh seeing how easily Maan teased and troubled Anu. While Maan’s position was not required to be said as he was lost in that beautiful and whole hearted laugh.
Geet was turning red due to that laugh but then when her eyes went towards the both of them she tried to control herself. “Sorry… sorry… but I couldn’t control myself.” Geet apologised.
“Maan, that is not right. She is really hard working & dedicated doctor.” Geet supported her junior.
“Well I can’t say much with you ladies, now if you two beautiful girls excuse me. I have appointments to attend.” Maan said as he walked out of Geet’s cabin.
“Anu…” Geet stressed to help her.
“Don’t worry Maam I will fill in.” Anu finally spilled the beans bringing a million dollar smile on Geet’s face. Anyways these two had developed closeness in these few days that they used to have some kinds of silly teasing’s. But still Geet couldn’t share her secrets with her.
Sometimes Geet even thought to bring Anu & Maan together but then restrained herself saying she need not become cupid for anyone. If destiny wants to pair them they would definitely be one day. And how much ever you are friendly they are too personal things to be interfered by third person.
It was the day when Geet had to be present with her parents at the registrar office. She was in her white full sleeves salwar with a bright red veil adoring her neck as her Maa had insisted saying that registration documents will have her photo’s and the registrar would take pictures at the time of registration so she should be more presentable and since the document would be also preserved for long picture should be clear & beautiful. She had never accompanied before so it was kind of a weird to be there. Well for Geet this was first time she even undergoing all those procedure so she was quite unknown to all these facts and hence just thought to oblige her dear Maa. So many people running around, shouting in loud voices at others, long queues. She witnessed mediators approaching public to help them for extra commission at the entrance itself.
Government offices are always a problem; there will not be a place to sit properly nor stand and even if she got some place that would not be hygiene and not to forget the stinking smell. Well she can’t even blame it on anyone as there will so many offices under one roof and so many people coming here for various works, to maintain neatness everywhere is not an easy job too. But even then she had never liked that government office nor would ever like it. Those lazy people who always make others wait and ask them one or the other things; make us run behind them until they get there bribe is so disgusting.
They all came to the reception when Ravindar suggested “Geet, Keertana you both wait here. I would check with the officials the status and progress of everything. I would come once they ask for you. It is very crowded there better if you both could wait here itself.”
“Okay Papa, that’s actually better just tell us how to reach the office we will come when you call us.” Geet said.
“Geet, I can’t guide you as all the offices are interlinked and because of the new Government all the name plates are getting replaced and reprinted so even the names are not there so you may just get lost. So I will come and fetch you.” Ravindar suggested.
Geet & her Maa sat patiently and started to catch up with each other’s life as even though they lived under the same roof it had been a long time they could talk. Geet was always busy with her patients and as the guilt was there in her, she even avoided being in front of her parents.
“Geet, tell me beta how is your work and study going on. Nowadays you don’t even have time for your mother.” Keertana complained.
“It is not like that, I am just too held up with the work that I can’t even talk properly with you both. You know how much I miss to speak and work is really good.” Geet said.
“So, who all are there in your department?” Keerthana asked.
“Maa, we are 6 of us in our department and only me and Anu work as a team, as she is still a fresher. I am guiding her so we share our responsibility and have fun too. She is really good and sweet too” Geet replied.
She was still engrossed in talks with her mother when her attention was drawn by that man whom she every moment wishes to see and be infront of her even though Geet did see him in every 3-4 hours of intervals with the excuses. Her heart wasn’t at peace until Maan graced it with his presence. Well this little stare didn’t go unnoticed by Keertana as Geet’s concentration shifted was magnetic. Words stopped from her mouth, hands halted in mid, eyes freezes at him but one thing which was in motion was her heart that was throbbing in her chest.
Her legs had just stirred when Keeratana interrupted “Geet… Geet… what happened? Why did you pause? Whom are you seeing?”
“Oh… Maa… Do you see a man there in that purple shirt having some papers in his hand? He is Dr. Maan, he was the one who had blackmailed me and I had told everything to you guys.” Geet replied while her eyes still struck to him.
“Then I should thank him, can you call him here.” Keertana asked her.
“Sure Maa…I will call him now itself.” Geet said as she pulled out her mobile dialling him immediately and asked him to come to reception where they were present.
“Hey Geet…you are here today? And you look so young in Salwar… I had always seen you in those pale color saree. You seriously need a change in your wardrobe.” Maan went on when he saw Geet in those white salwar.
“Maan… can you keep quite for a while. Meet my Maa” Geet introduced her Maa to Maan as she had hid behind Geet before.
“Hello Aunty… How are you? Sorry I didn’t see you earlier.” Maan enquired.
“Hello Maan beta… I am fine… how are you… heard from your mother that they have almost finalised a girl for you.” Keertana enquired. “By the way I had thank you and also ask sorry to you for all the trouble that my Geet created.”
“Oh it is absolutely fine Aunty…” Maan replied.
Before they went on with her talks Geet thought to change the topic “Maan how come you are here.”
“Well Anu had appointment here for getting her certificates certified by the local sub-registrar. And since you had put her on duty she gave it to me.” Maan replied politely.
“She could have given it to me. I could have helped her.” Geet said bit disappointed at Anu took help of Maan but not her.
“Did you tell her that you were supposed to be here at your off duty?” Maan questioned her with a smirk.
“Oops… I hadn’t told her right.” Geet said realising. They stood conversing when Ravindar joined in.
“Geet… come we are up next… you need to get back to hospital too right.” Ravindar suggested.
“Well Geet you can finish your work then we can go together to hospital” Maan suggested as he would finish his work soon.
“That would be really good.” Keertana seconded.
The plan was set but when Geet was about to enter the offices she got a call from Anu and she couldn’t have ignored that call so she picked it immediately.
The plan was set but when Geet was about to enter the offices she got a call from Anu and she couldn’t have ignored that call so she picked it immediately.
“Yes Anu… any problem.” Geet asked hearing a tensed voice at the other end.
“A very big problem Dr. Geet, I have just postponed the issue but we need you here in another 30 mins or else a volcano would erupt here.” Dr. Anu said little scared
“Why Anu… what happened.” Geet asked little worried.
“Oh … that Mrs. Mehra is here and she wants to see you and is not letting anyone else to treat her. But some how I convinced her to get a scan by which Dr. Geet would be back from her emergency.” Anu explained the situation.
“Okay, I will leave right away.” Geet said as she kept her mobile only to witness her parent’s worried faces.
“Papa, Maa I will have to leave now. There is an emergency that patient is quite cranky and she has turned up all suddenly.” Geet said apologetically.
“Geet, just a few signatures which would take just 5 minutes by which even Dr. Maan would also come then you both can leave.” Ravindar suggested.
“Okay Papa… but please hurry up. I need to rush out.” Geet told.
Just then a boy came with papers which had to be signed and Geet did that promptly and they were sent to expedite the procedure and while they waited; Maan was also back.
“Geet, you are hungry come there is a canteen on top floor we can have it there.” Maan said as he saw her literally chewing her nails.
“Maan, I am in no mood for your jokes here. I want to reach the hospital before that Mrs. Mehra comes back. I don’t know what Anu would have to face if I don’t reach there on time.” Geet said but this time her nails were safe.
“Okay then come we will check inside and know the status. Anyways we can reach in just 15 minutes as I have got my bike.” Maan said as he extended his hand for her.
Geet gladly took his hand and walked beside him but the pathway to the office inside was a long one as they went past many cubicles each one of them with an official surrounded by some people. They took a turn towards right to see Ravindar and other official getting the paper work ready.
“Papa…” Geet called out as she entered.
“Oh… Geet… Maan you both… came inside, I was about to come out.” Ravindar said.
“No problem Papa… is everything done can we leave.” Geet said little hesitant.
“Get the photos done first then take your seat. I need one last signature in this book.” The official said as Geet sat he continued looking at Maan. “Why are you standing you can also sit down boy.”
Once they sat down pictures were clicked while the official commented “Girl, you can atleast smile for the photo. Get another photo and sit straight”
Geet just followed the instructions and signed the papers in a flash and asked “Is it done. Can we move now?”
“Yes, Geet it is done. Where is your Maa? You left her alone there. Just get her here and then you can leave.” Ravindar said showing his little disappointment on leaving her Maa alone there.
“Oh… sorry Papa, I was in tension so I missed it. I will bring her right away.” Geet ran from there to get her Maa.
And once Keeratana was inside both Maan & Geet left but only after Ravindar saying “Drive slowly and be careful Maan and take care of our Geet. She is our princess.”
“Papa… he will take care. Can we leave please?” Geet almost pleaded and once they got the nod. They just flee from there.
“Geet, keep this certificates with you and be careful or else Anu would get it done from me only again. And I definitely don’t want to come in this crowd again.” Maan said as both settled on the bike. “Thank god you are not in saree today; see how comfortably you can sit.”
Geet just gave a pat on his back with the same certificates laughing at his comment while Maan said “Careful don’t crush the poor certificates with your anger.” And went on troubling her as Geet settled behind him and they raced carefully to the hospital.
Geet left all her guards for a while as she captured every moment of Maan. She had already thought to cherish all this memories down the lane of her life. When ever she is alone she had to just rewind back to these memories. Her every moment of happiness was securely captured and kept for her perusal when the need of a companion was felt and not in exist. These would save her from any loneliness but she just hoped that moment she never has to face. She was still in her thoughts when she felt a jerk making her realise what her position was Geet had completely leaned on Maan as her head rested on his back with the certificates file in between them and her one hand was on his shoulder supporting her on the ride.
“Geet we are here…” Maan spoke but that felt like alien as words were not even falling in her ears. For another second she was blank then she realised Mrs. Mehra was waiting and she was back to her patients.
As Geet entered her cabin even Mrs. Mehra followed her wave of relief passed through Geet & Anu as everything was settled in time. And the happiest was Mrs. Mehra to find there lovely doctor all bright, happy and as energetic as she always will be. Once she was treated her cabin doors were banged and in came the Dr. Maan with his wide smile announcing the lunch break.
“Sorry senior doctors I have lunch date in the canteen with Dr. Shekar to discuss regarding my scholarship for post graduation so if you could excuse me.” Dr. Anu said leaving the cabin but then barged in quite immediately asking “Dr. Maan, my certified certificates please.”
“That’s with me, here you go and yes all the best.” Geet said and smiled as she witnessed Anu running away.
First light of sunlight had started to emerge when Dr. Maan dropped Dr. Geet at her residency after their night duty. It was less than 24 hours and Geet had already finished her second ride on his bike and from 1st ride to second one thing didn’t leave her; that was the bright smile which was plastered on her face. Geet lazily walked till the swing feeling the morning breeze remembering her last day how Maan had made it very special for her.
It was at the time of lunch when Maan had broken into Geet’s cabin with his lunch bag and Anu had run away saying her date was waiting for her. This was not the first time they were having lunch together but certainly after a long gap as after Anu joined they never had got this chance. Geet did notice Maan being extra happy & smiling today so she thought to enquire it.
“Maan, what is that which has made you extra happy today? You don’t seem to stop that smile.” Geet questioned.
“You want to me to tell you the truth or …” Maan raised his doubt and leaving that in mid.
“Maan, if you want to share it tell me or else you don’t have to lie to me.” Geet said bit disappointed at his withdrawal as they were now in terms of sharing many secrets.
“Okay I think I can share it with you, actually you are looking breath-taking beautiful today in salwar. Why don’t you wear them regularly? Not that you look less ravishing in Sari’s but still you look more lively and young in this.” Maan said with his dazzling smile.
“Not again Maan, I am fine this way; I didn’t get time or else today too I would have been in the same attire. I am here to treat not to worry about my looks” Geet replied rolling her eyes as he had yet again brought this topic but this time she replied as earlier her mother was just next to him. What would her mother think when someone comments on her daughter’s attire.
“All right I will not talk that now but undoubtedly afterwards but now I wanted to give you this.” He took out a pair of ear drops shining in the bright light. “The moment I saw them; they cribbed to me saying they wished to adore your empty ears. So I got it for you.” He placed it in front of her.
“Maan, I can’t take this.” She outrightedly rejected it.
“Geet, see it is matching your dress too. And look at these how sad they are feeling being rejected.” Maan made a face showing how gloomy the earrings became.
Having enough of drama Geet accepted that ear drops and pushed it inside her bag when Maan again started “Geet, wear them please.” Now she didn’t know why but saying no to him was becoming difficult for her. Thinking he would stop his pestering she wore them but whom was she judging. The moment he was done he complimented her but again complained that these ear drops are being missed by a pendant attached in the mid of a chain. He took that out a matching pendant and placed it before her cutely asking her to wear them and keep the heart of the small ear drops.
After a long time after debating with him she finally took that delicate chain in her hand and securely fastened around her slender white neck. This time Geet started before Maan started any of his further emotional blackmail “Maan, my appointments are waiting.” Off course even Maan’s were also waiting so he reluctantly left her again to meet her at coffee break.
Once Maan left she thought to take them out but her hands were just not in a position to part with those. And then Anu was also back and even she complimented them as she was for the first time witnessing Geet with any jewels.
“But Dr. Geet still there is one thing which is missing, you know what?” Anu asked for which Geet cutely replied a no.
“A bindi on your forehead, wait I have it then you would look perfect.” Anu said and immediately ran to get one from her bag. Even before Geet could say something Anu had placed it in middle of her eyebrows.
If Anu was less Maan was back with his coffee break to trouble her more as he had got yet another thing for her and that was a set of bangles that too were matching with her set. Geet was now getting suspicious about how he got all for which Maan easily told the truth “Geet, yes they are all came in pack. I am just giving in instalments.”
“Maan, what is it? Why are you giving me all these? I can’t take these?” Geet finally said what’s running in her mind.
“Geet, I am just too happy today so just giving gifts to all whom I adore. You know I got things for even Anu.” Maan said making Anu to jump in happiness but was short-lived as he continued. “But then thought Avi is there for gifting Anu. So I left them at the shop itself.”
“What??? You didn’t get me gifts. Avi will get me a gift that’s different but you are also supposed to gift me.” Anu said pouting cutely.
“Who is Avi?” Geet questioned.
“Avi aka Avinash… Anu’s love interest and my best friend in school.” Maan said as Anu turned bit red remember Avi.
“You both knew each other before it self.” Geet enquired.
“Unfortunately Yes.” Maan said making a sad face for which Anu came back with files to beat him and Maan continued “I pity Avi… he will have to bear this beast.” That was it Maan had to face the wrath of Anu for teasing her. After the initial shocks Geet recovered and supported Anu “Maan that is the limit, our Anu is too innocent and cute. You can’t call her as beast but a beautiful doll.”
“Okay if you ladies team up. What can poor boys do? Meet you lady again at the dinner.” Maan said as he bid bye and walked out.
Today had been really wonderful for Geet was that because of gifts or was for the special attention by Maan or moments with him or was that because of the awareness of the love story of Anu. Everything seems to be quite pleasant but still there was some kind of trouble alert which Geet was sensing. She would have thought more but then Maan came and all those alerting sense took a nap and she expected him to come up with yet another thing to trouble her but to her surprise he was quite and happy self as he usually will be.
A little disappointment she felt as her expectations were not met, seeing him quite she just chided herself to anticipate more from him. And why should he anyways give her at first place why did she expect it. She was here to just capture moments from far not to force herself into him. Her all complains vanished as Maan started took out food that was Geet’s favourite and he shared it with her too. So that it self was enough for her to be happy and decided not to get affected with these things as in future there could be more than this.
Even for dinner only these two were there as Anu had left early that day. But when these two were together they never needed anyone else too. Maan called Geet to the couch to discuss some of the latest journals that was the usual way they used to spend the night. That’s how they always started and ended up with speaking all kinds of topic and when the night would turn into a day they would have not even known.
But today it was different they chatted, they teased, they fought but before even knowing Geet droopy eyes won and she just slept resting her head on the couch but that wasn’t comfortable and slowly she started to search that comfort spot and at last she did found that his shoulder. What more can he ask for his love was next to him and with full trust she had slept on him. First she just rested her head on him then slowly her hands to made way to support herself from not falling. He just held her and just cherishes that feel of her thinking “Who knows what brings the first light of next morning? Will she accept their doings or just walks out of him?”
Maan was never in the favour of getting into trouble with her but when elders planned everything he couldn’t have said nor done anything. They had given him some days to make her change the decision but Geet didn’t budge. A week ago Geet’s Papa had come to visit him to tell his final decision but Maan had convinced to give the effort a little more time. For which Ravindar had said “Maan, next week I would ask if she wants to marry and if the answer is No. I won’t hear a word from you or Geet. You both will have to do what we elders have planned.”
“But uncle it’s your daughters life, how can you just plan a collusion against her.” Maan said.
“Maan, if she is stubborn then we, her parents are nothing less. If she could take decision for her self for not marrying without even consulting us for our happiness then we can also think of her happiness and take decision for her. When you came with your parents the other day asking her hand even after what she had done to you that time itself I planned to give her hand to you. But knowing Geet I have to plan this with your parents.” Ravindar had given his decision on that day. Remembering Geet’s Papa’s words Maan just slipped into a deep slumber still somewhere worried about morning sun.
With the crisping bird sound coming from her mobile Geet woke up feeling a little ache on her neck as she looked around to have found herself on Maan. How could she have just slept on him? Usually they used to be so busy with chatting that sleep never knocked anyone but what was it that yesterday they slept and that to her on him. She thanked the heavens above for making him a sleepy head and her act could be hidden from him. It would have been so embarrassing for both. Offcourse she knew his efforts to make her agree for being his better half but she can be only bring bitter not better things.
She moved out collecting her bag as she had to go her home to freshen up. And as if missing her aroma he got up only to find himself alone in Geet’s cabin. “Oh… where did she run away?” Maan thought as he grabbed his coat and reached his bike. Her house is near and must be on the way as that was her regular time to leave after night duty.
Geet had just stepped out and was walked a few steps when a bike stopped next to him. She was already embarrassed to have seen her self on the morning and if he does these things how was she to keep her little heart under control. Before she could say or do anything she heard him say “Hop on, I will drop you home.”
“It’s just next lane, you don’t have to take the trouble I will walk.” Geet said.
“Geet, don’t start morning itself. Hop on.” Maan said and looking at his worried face she didn’t want to argue more and just followed his words.
Next moment she was in front of her home and she got down slowly and was walking away without looking at him when she felt him hold her wrist and handing another gift pack in her hand. Before she could gauge that he had left her to ponder about it.
Now she was all the while smiling as she sat on the swing to check the pack and she found a pair of sparkling anklets in them. Without any hesitation she tried that too now as there was no one to look at her.
She entered her home all bright and breezy to find her papa busy with the newspaper as she wished him “Good morning Papa.”
“Good morning Geet, how was your night duty?” He enquired.
There was a little pause she answered “Wonderful Papa. I will move to get ready”
“Geet, can you get the red file from my study.” Ravindar asked.
“Sure Papa.” Geet said and went to look for the red file in the study but as she took that there was something else which caught her attention. Her photo was inside another file which was below this red file.
Curiosity took over her and she opened the file to read the words “Certificate of Registration of Marriage”. Furthermore to that she couldn’t read a word her eyes was struck to only one thing photo’s printed on them. It was a picture of Maan and Geet’s taken together.
She didn’t have to read a word but understood the rest. Who all could be a part to the conspiracy against her? Only tears made their way out while she took the file in her hand to get her answers from the person who was the in charge to whole plot.
“Papa, here is your file.” Geet said handing over the file.
“Geet, I asked for the red one. Not this one, don’t worry I will get it myself.” Ravindar said and got up to get his file.
“But I thought you would want to look into this one.” Geet said knowing very well her papa will not accept.
“If I had not reviewed it before then I would have glanced it Geet.” Ravindar said determined.
“Then you know what this is?” Geet asked coldly.
“Yes I know.” Ravindar accepted.
“Why Papa, you know everything still you did this to your own daughter. How can you just get me married with anyone? Haven’t we discussed this issue before too at that time you just agreed to do these things behind my back?” Geet questioned.
“I had clearly told you that time Geet. I will only agree for now not for ever.” Ravindar stated.
“You could have at least told me before doing all this scheming.” Geet said at least she would have escaped it from this trap.
“I asked you Geet the other day we have another family asking for your hand. And you mercilessly said no, so we planned it all without you knowing anything.” Ravindar told her reminding the other day how he had asked her.
“But you said you want me in the registrar office for property registration.” Geet questioned more as the helplessness feeling was building inside her.
“I never mentioned it Geet. You just seemed to presume that it was a property registration.” Ravindar reminded her about her presumption.
Geet felt like bursting into tears hearing her Papa went against her wishes. How could they only think of her daughter momentary happiness? But she needed to know everything before accusing anyone. How she wished she could go back in time and change things. Her blind trust on her parents has landed her in a deep trouble. Why did she have to sign those papers? Her one mistake has pushed Maan into danger. The thought of Maan made her frenetic, she ran to get her mobile; she had to know if he was fine.
She dialled his number but then it was unanswered making her fume more against her parent’s deed and at the same time she was scared out of her wits. She shivered with the mere fear that now that she is married could bring harm to Maan; no… no…. nothing should happen to him. She repeatedly said to herself that he is safe but then her heart wasn’t at peace. A tremor passed through her as her calls were unattended.
Silent spectators to the whole change of Geet emotions were her parents, who were amazed to see this side of her. Disappointment on break of trust by her parents to a living nightmare to assure her self that he is safe and sound. Unable to look at those tears and trembling figure Keertana tried to calm her “Geet… Geet… How could you think evil about him? He is your husband.”
“Maa… Don’t call him like that or else his life will be in danger.” Geet said still freaking out but not leaving her attempts to reach him.
“Geet… Why are you thinking all negative? Why are you so much worried about him? He will be just fine.” Keertana tried to assure her.
“How can I not worry? He doesn’t think about himself but I have to because I love him Maa I love him. How can I put him under threat? Why did you do this Papa? Why?” Geet was getting uncontrollable by her parents.
Just when Geet thought she would take up some serious action her world got back its harmony. The serenity was filled in her heart when she heard him “Geet…” She turned to look back at him to ensure he was fine and no harm was touching him.
Maan couldn’t be in peace knowing her parents had decided to disclose the news of their marriage in first thing in the morning to her and they didn’t want him at that time. Geet may not want to speak with him in front of her. And her reaction to that was what he had been dreading. Without bothering about anything he just made his way back to Geet’s house. But as he entered he was blessed with hear her confession that she loves him, somewhere he knew her madness which was also a reason why still he was unable to get those words out from her mouth.
Hearing him Geet ran to ensure his well-being. “Maan… Why didn’t you pick my call?”
“I was driving Geet; I didn’t hear my mobile ring.” Maan said calming her.
Once Maan was in front of her, she realised why she had to face this nightmare. “Maan, you knew everything then why did you take this devastating step.” Geet yelled on him.
“I know what I have done Geet. It is my wish to marry you and have you as my life partner. You are one who could be in my every up & downs of my life. You are one who could mould yourself to me without any hitch. You are the one with whom I can spend entire life and still I wouldn’t feel I had enough of it. You are the one whose smile would make me energetic.” Maan went on explaining Geet what position she holds in his life but she was not in the condition to listen to them.
“How can you be so selfish? You only thought about your happiness. Do you have any idea how I would live with you. Every second I would live with a fear, fear of losing you. This marriage could have made you mine but I reality I am married to the fear of losing you. Fear of feeling that any harm towards you is because of me. It doesn’t matter whether anyone would accuse me or not but I would know it that the main person responsible is me. And me only.” Geet wailed reasoning out her reservations.
“Geet, listen to me…” Maan pulled her to make her look into his eyes. “I love you… I … Love… You… And it doesn’t matter to me if I live for a day or for ever but I want only to be yours and only yours. Further about you being curse to me would have harmed me long back as I had accepted you as mine long back. These signing off of the papers are only a formality. You can’t just disgrace our love Geet. Fine let’s accept your terms of understanding the future, according to you as you are my wife I will not live long right and being my wife it becomes your duty too to fulfil my every wish. Then fulfil my last wish till my last breath never ever make me feel I am at my death-bed.” Maan nailed finally at her vulnerable point.
“Maan…” was all she could utter as her hand still rested on his lips when he had uttered those worst words for any wife. How could she fight when Maan says anything like this but laying down her arms accepting to his wishes.
“Geet… We are waiting for your answer. Will you marry me with all the rituals? Will you give the happiness of being a bride to your parents? Will you accept me as your husband from your heart without any absurd customaries?” Maan probed Geet to voice out what was in her heart. “My life would be ecstatic with you only if you are part of it and without you I will have to live a cursed life. Would you want me to me to live a cursed one.”
“No… I would never want that for you. Any pain any curse it has to be for me only mine. This is my promise no matter what happens I wouldn’t let any harm near you. I would be your shield to all your problems.” added Geet with difficulty as tears clouded her vision barring her to see the happiness of her the acceptance.
With her acceptance everyone was happy and Maan wanted to just kiss her but then he was aware of his surroundings both her parents were keenly watching them so he controlled his urges with just pulling her into his embrace.
Without any delay Keertana dashed into kitchen to get sweets while Ravindar took his mobile to share this happiness with Maan’s parents. Unknowingly it give the privacy to the newly wed couples as Maan sealed the deal till eternity with his kiss on those rosy lips which had accepted him just few seconds before.
Geet felt a bit relaxed after her nap in the afternoon and first thing her eyes stopped at the frame of their wedding on the bed post. She couldn’t help but to take that in her hand as she rested them close to her heart. How she wished to hold him in real, how she wish to get lost in those strong arms which always had made her believe that she is secured from all the harm. A tear escaped from those hazel eyes as she missed him more than her breath. That’s when she noticed her mobile next to her bed and involuntarily her hands went to message Maan. Geet could only type one line…. “I miss you!!!!.” furthermore restlessness was added to her heart when she didn’t receive a reply from the other end. It had been 20 days before when she had received the last message. Another tear fell out of her eyes on realising she didn’t know the where abouts of Maan anymore.
Yet another drop of tear fell on the face in the frame which sends her back to the memory of the day she could never forget all her life how Maan had religiously became hers. But things never remain same just like from the day she got to know about her tricked wedding. On that day when their parents were busy in fixing the date, venue and even menu for each of the events at one side while at the other end ladies were discussing about the shopping arenas which is best for jewellery, dresses and not to forget gifts. Seeing the huzzle buzzle, elders asked us to freshen up as we had just returned from our night duty. I had led Maan to my room as we were reminded of our very first conversation but then we had come long way from there. Now we were married and still going to be married too.
“Maan would you mind; if I use the wash room first.” Geet said as she broke the silence as she needed some time alone of all these things at one side and at another the assurance that he is safe.
He just nodded as he was still absorbing things around him. But I could feel his gaze on me as I was moving towards the dresser to pick my change of clothes.
I picked one of the light blue Saree of mine as I kept it over the partition and turned to move towards the wash room but then Maan wasn’t there in room. I wondered where he went just then I heard him answer his mobile in balcony. A sense of calmness again settled in me though I promised not to get affected by my fear, it was beyond my control to not worry about him. He was a part of my heart from a long time which I had wanted to oppose even to my own self. As associating him with me even in my mind could invite trouble.
Once in washroom drops of tears fell off the rim of my eyes as it no longer could stay hidden in those eyes. A little time alone would always help but I still doubted whether I would fulfil that promise to forget my fear so easily. Today I took more time to complete my shower than usual but still the heaviness in my heart had not reduced a bit. Accepting him was not difficult but overcoming the constant fear which rose right from the bottom of the heart was definitely difficult everytime he would be away from my view.
As I stepped out, I could feel him follow my moves but without meeting his eyes I rushed into the dressing room. How could I leave my clothes at the dresser and come out in the bathrobe but when I was about to close the door of the dressing room a hand stopped me from doing so. With a slight push he was inside with me alone in that small room bringing in another fear of anticipation. My hands shivered a bit and eyes downcast afraid to view something which she may not be able to fulfil but he surprised me with his words this time.
“Geet…look at me.” His fingers raised my chin making my face clearly to him but I had my eyes closed. “Will you accept another wish of mine?”
A sense of accepting his words had already seeped in and involuntarily my head nodded without hearing what he may ask for. I felt his hands pressing mine with something in between. My eyes flew open to check what that was, only to find my salwar suit in front of me. “Wear this for me, no more those pale sarees. You look marvellous in these suits.”
It was one of those suits which I had bought it on Maa’s persistence but never wore it. And when Maan asked how I could deny him.
“Geet will you promise me another thing” Maan asked.
She wasn’t in a position refuse any thing and again just nodded.
“Geet, my few words or your promises wouldn’t make those fears vanish from your heart and though you may not make it obvious to anyone I know you hide that turmoil behind tears but hiding it would only hurt you rather would haunt you. So I would want you to let them out if not to others atleast to you could share it with me. And most importantly I don’t wish to share my place with anyone in your heart.” Maan said and thought exactly how that was to be done now that there weren’t many barriers left. Ever thing can be sorted out with just his love.
As those words left his lips I covered that little distance in between them melting into his embrace and letting out all those what had been concealed deep within my heart. Speaking out everything would pay way to sheer understanding and also develop this relation with strong base. After our little confrontation to give a positive start we were back to our family to know that 20 days are left for our weddings.
Downstairs the elders were ready with their plan and they didn’t impose any restrictions of not meeting before marriage as they knew we work at same place and being doctors we don’t get too much of leave. Along with the preparations so did our relation start on an official note. We spent most of our times in serving patients in morning hours but our regular breaks were used in building a relation or soothing my heart. Yes the fear did lurk around me everytime still but then a constant message or call did make my heart to be at peace. Maan started to plan and inform the schedule to me in advance so that I may not get any worry about him. And when at emergency time I was always informed beyond his regular time. Night duties were a blessing in disguise which actually helped in being together. Sleep which was a very short affair for so many years now in his secure arms felt even shorter as I didn’t wanted to move away from him.
Days passed faster and we were married even religiously and as we dreamt we worked to serve the people together we made a pair with which things were falling in place but all things change their course in due time. Exactly the same happened as I started to feel ill and tired but I never did skip being with him nor did he stop me. As still I couldn’t have let him go alone nevertheless even that days had to pass and I was back to my routine. He was being little more carefull with me; I could feel it in his actions. Knowing him and his whereabouts always kept my fear at bay and gradually Maan not being infront of me would make me miss him more than worrying about his safety.
485 days 6 hours and we were inseparable but after that here I am bound to be here where as he is away from me. Not a word I have heard from him in past 482 hours, I haven’t been able be with him now. How I wish I could follow him even now just like before. And every minute away from him feels like my life is drained out of me. Before I could think anymore I felt a pang in my heart and next second a cry was left out. However the cry brought more happiness as my life came back to me. Yes, my son cocooned safely in Maan’s arm as he tried to put our 20 days old son back to sleep.
Without a second delay I held him in my hand to quench his hungry. And within some more seconds he his back to his deep slumber. While I smile at Maan as he take our son to settle in the crib. I close my eyes feeling content of living this life with Maan had I sticked to the plan of mine I would have missed so much of happiness. A hand rested over my arm involuntarily my head is rests over his shoulder while my hands clutched his arms and with my eyes closed I hear him “Geet… You must be tired, sleep for a while.”
I turn over him as I rest my hands over his waist not letting him go away from me even for a second but not a word comes out from my lips either. Making him wonder what’s wrong with her, Geet and listening to his words that too without a fight.
“Geet, are you fine??” Maan enquired but was surprised to hear not a word from her but she just pressed her self more into Maan. Geet always did that when she wanted to hid something or not wanting to answer him. And he knew how to make her speak too.
“Geet, you have changed… nowadays you don’t share anything with me.” Maan complained as always.
Geet smiled as he started with same sentence everytime he had to make her speak. But today she wanted to just hear him, feel him. She could cherish this time only until their son wakes up for their attention. In last month they have not got a minute properly, first it was his conference and next once their son was born; one or the other relative would disturb them. Can anyone believe 20 days and they didn’t get a second alone nor was given an oppurunity to speak. Either I would have slept due to tiredness or he would be out on night duties as our prince needs my attention even during night time.
“Geet… Geet…” Maan again called to get any response.
“I missed you…” Geet said as she snuggled more into him if it was even possible. “It has been 484 hours and we haven’t spoken to each other.”
“You left adding 43 mintues Geet. I missed you too.” Maan said.
“Liar… then why didn’t you reply to my message.” Geet cribbed.
“Which message?? What message?? Let me see, pass my mobile from that lamp stand next to you.” Maan said suggesting he had not seen it either. “I kept my mobile here and taken our son out as he was about to cry. And as I had just returned from hospital that was still in silent and you missed seeing next to you.”
“I don’t know all those things. You didn’t reply that’s it” Geet proclaimed.
Maan was ready to fight her but then it was their son who own as his slight cry made them come out from their world. “Look our son is in my team, even before I could say he is crying complaining to you.” Maan winning smirk a little as he went to pick him up.
As Geet took him to feed she said “Not only him but even I am in your team as you wanted it or not I am your curse, speculative curse with whom you will have to deal with life long.”
“You know I love to live this curse. Love you forever.” Maan said embracing both of them together while he kissed on her forehead.
“Love you too.” Geet said as she resting her back on his chest.
